The last time I visited the CNE I was probably about seven. I remember almost nothing about the experience. Now, many years later, I decided that I was ready to go back. I ignored the many “why?”s that I received when I told people that I was going (and a few “that’s my nightmare”) and I jumped on the Dufferin bus headed for glory.
Well, I didn’t find glory per say. I found a whole lot of people, some expensive games and precarious rides, overpriced mediocre food, a sad casino and a surprising amount of country music. Highlights included: a giant wizard sand sculpture, a ride that allowed for an escape from the crowd as we soared high above them and a generous helping of Dole Whip, which I thought couldn’t be found outside of Disneyland. Sidebar: if you haven’t had Dole Whip and you are Lactose intolerant or dairy free, you must do so immediately because it will change your life. It is pineapple magic.
Overall, I had a lovely time because of good company and pineapple frozen desserts, but I’m in no hurry to go rushing back next year. I don’t need to gamble away my hard-earned pennies throwing a ball at something in order to win a giant stuffed tiger. I’d rather spend $100 on a delicious meal. But hey, chacun à son goût…
Below are some photos of people who were bolder and went on way more rides than I did. They look like they’re having a pretty good time.
